AMD Ryzen gaming CPU sales dominate Intel at this store, but there’s a catch

AMD Ryzen gaming CPU sales accounted for 92% of all CPUs sold by one German retailer, leaving Intel with just under 8% of its CPU sales, according to a new report. This utter dominance by AMD would appear to be reflective of the lead the company has established in gaming performance compared to Intel’s latest processors.

In our AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D review, we declared it the single best gaming CPU by a considerable margin, and sure enough it’s this chip that leads the charge for AMD‘s sales. However, the company’s Zen 5 CPUs in general are still outselling Intel at this store, painting the picture of a near monopoly in the minds of PC buyers looking to upgrade their CPU and motherboard. However, a few factors make the true picture less clear.

The headline-grabbing sales numbers come from German retailer MindFactory, by way of a post on X (formerly Twitter) by tech YouTuber, TechEpiphanyYT. In their post they break down the distribution of CPU sales by units, revenue, and motherboard socket, along with showing sales for individual chips during January 2025.

We can see from this data that the 9800X3D dominates sales, with 8,390 CPUs sold out of a 25,625 total. Meanwhile, the 7600X3D and 7800X3D also account for 4,070 units between them. The first Intel chip to make it onto the ordered list is the Core i7-14600KF with just 150 units sold.

However, digging deeper, there are two key factors that suggest the global sales picture isn’t as extreme as shown here. The first is that some users report MindFactory as being well known for not having Intel stock, with one commenter on TechPowerUp’s comments section noting that the store doesn’t stock the Intel Core Ultra 285K or 265K, and that buyers know not to look for them on this website.

What’s more, TechEpiphanyYT also shares apparent Amazon US sales data, and this suggests the sales split isn’t quite so dominated by AMD. The company still takes just under 80% of sales, with Intel taking just over 20%, but that’s a significant difference from the figures cited by the German retailer.

The US sales are also led by the 9800X3D but it’s the cheaper, older 7600X, and 5600X chips that take second and third spots. Notably, though, the US sales figures don’t include any Intel Core i7-14700K sales, which could hint at the numbers not being an entirely true reflection of Amazon US’ actual sales numbers or either company’s general global sales. We would expect the 14700K to still be a somewhat desirable upgrade for some users.

As such, both sets of sales data must be taken with a few grains of salt and seen as a speculative representation of the true picture. Regardless, even if there are some omissions and some aspects of the data that remain questionable, the pattern is clear, which is that the 9800X3D has been a smash hit for AMD.
